Department Administrator, Bioinformatics Requisition # 810258 ABOUT UT SOUTHWESTERN MEDICAL CENTER The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center ranks among the top academic medical centers in the world. The medical center has four degree-granting institutions: UT Southwestern Medical School, UT Southwestern Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, UT Southwestern School of Health Professions and the UT Southwestern School of Public Health. The schools train about 3,700 medical, graduate, and allied health students, residents, and postdoctoral fellows each year. ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT OF BIOINFORMATICS The Lyda Hill Department of Bioinformatics was founded in 2015 based on a gift by the Dallas philanthropist Lyda Hill. The department remains philanthropically endowed and has an annual budget nearing $10 million. The mission of the department is to generate the foundations in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence for UT Southwestern to navigate the information technological opportunities and challenges of the 21st century. The department is still led by its inaugural Chair, Dr. Gaudenz Danuser, who has recruited a faculty of 17 tenure/tenure-track and research-track professors with expertise in computer science, applied mathematics, physics and quantitative biology. The department has an international staff of ~120 employees and is still on a trajectory of vigorous growth. POSITION SUMMARY The position of Department Administrator is for an independent, proactive, and creative individual with experience in modern management within an academic or entrepreneurial setting. The role involves leading and developing the administrative team, recruiting and retaining faculty and staff, managing department services, networking within the organization, supervising finances, overseeing space management, and promoting the department nationally and internationally. The position requires outstanding communication skills and a vision for advancing the department's research and training environment. EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION Required: Bachelor’s degree in business administration or related field, and six (6) years of directly related experience with three (3) years in supervisory/management capacity, required. Applicants without the stated preferred degree, but with significant additional related experience may be considered. Preferred: Master’s degree in business or healthcare administration, and eight (8) years directly related experience with at least four (4) years in supervisory/management capacity. JOB DUTIES ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Provides strategic leadership, oversight and management over all aspects of the day-to-day administration of the department; works in close collaboration with departmental leadership to implement strategic and operational plans. Supports and partners with the Chief Operating Officer for Academic Affairs on School of Medicine and Health System goals and other administrative and financial issues. Manages administrative matters related to the development of new and existing programs; conducts on-going analyses of operational functioning within the department, develops and implements new or amended procedures as needed; develops quantitative metrics to measure the financial and operational impact of decisions and actions. Advises the department and institution on fiscal matters; ensures fiscal control through a reliable system of expenditure and revenue management; prepares and analyzes financial reports. Oversees departmental human resource activities including recruitment, interviewing, selection, visa management, salary analysis and sourcing, disciplinary actions, leave administration, employee development, and performance evaluations. Creates and develops business plans and models and proposes changes associated with funding lines, departmental research and educational activities, and faculty compensation where appropriate. Directs the administration of the research enterprise within the department; directs grant administration, recommends and develops new grant funding and supports the preparation of major research proposals. Oversees the administrative component of the promotion and tenure and faculty appointment process. Develops programs and standards of performance to continually measure and evaluate safety, service and quality improvement. Provides administrative direction to the educational programs of the department under the direction of the Chair/Director; supervises appropriate staff and provides coordination and oversight of educational functions. Represents the Chair/Director in his or her absence on administrative and fiscal matters. Sets a tone of “service excellence” for the department and is collaborative in nature focusing on data-based decision-making. Performs other duties as assigned.
