Job Description

We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Director of Communications and Public Relations to join our team. This senior-level position will play a pivotal role in developing and executing marketing communications strategies that align with our organizational goals. The Director will be responsible for overseeing media relations, member communications, strategic marketing campaigns, social media strategies, and brand management to enhance our organization's public image and influence within the medical genetics community.

Key Responsibilities:

Media Relations & Public Relations (25%)

Proactively lead national press and media initiatives, building strong media relationships to secure high-level coverage.
Oversee press outreach and coverage for key events, including national and international media relations.
Represent the organization at significant events such as National DNA Day and other important conferences.
Manage crisis communications effectively, ensuring the organization's voice is clear and consistent.
Member Communications (30%)

Serve as Managing Editor for the organization's flagship newsmagazine and monthly electronic member newsletter.
Write, edit, and proof a wide range of communications materials for internal and external audiences.
Oversee the creation of press releases, media kits, speeches, and presentations to effectively communicate the organization's activities and vision.
Strategic Communications & Marketing Campaigns (25%)

Collaborate with leadership to develop and implement strategic communications plans that resonate with diverse audiences.
Lead marketing communications campaigns to position the organization as a leader in medical genetics.
Manage and report on the effectiveness of various campaigns, including media relations, digital marketing, and social media initiatives.
Champion special initiatives like the Medical Genetics Awareness Week, using various platforms to highlight the contributions of the medical genetics field.
Social Media Strategy (15%)

Oversee the organization's social media presence, including the development and execution of strategies across platforms like Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, and Instagram.
Stay current with emerging trends in social media and apply new approaches to drive engagement and audience growth.
Track, analyze, and optimize social media performance to enhance engagement and reputation.
Brand & Visual Communications (5%)

Ensure all communications reflect a consistent brand voice, adhering to established messaging and visual guidelines.
Direct external vendors, including graphic designers and content creators, to produce high-quality communication materials.
Provide internal communication expertise to support cross-departmental initiatives.
Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, Journalism, or a related field is required; a Master's degree is preferred.
At least 10 years of experience in communications strategy development, preferably within a nonprofit, medical, or science-focused organization.
Strong background in media relations, digital marketing, and earned media campaigns.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to craft clear, compelling messages for diverse audiences.
Proven experience in project management, with the ability to handle multiple tasks and deadlines simultaneously.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and social media platforms; knowledge of iMIS is a plus.
Additional Information:

Salary Range: $150,000 - $160,000
Physical Requirements: This is primarily a sedentary role, requiring occasional light lifting and domestic travel up to 10%.
