Job Description

Shrub Oak International School () is a therapeutic day and residential school for autistic children, adolescents, and young adults with complex co-occurring conditions. 

Located in northern Westchester County, Shrub Oak offers unparalleled educational opportunities for autistic students in a family-centric, supportive environment. We offer a variety of programs to meet the needs of students across the spectrum, and our curriculum is based on the most advanced and successful evidence-based clinical and academic approaches in ASD education. 

Reporting to the Grounds Manager, the Facility & Maintenance Associate will have hands-on responsibility for the care, maintenance and upkeep of Shrub Oak International’s campus and facilities to reflect the school’s brand and standard of excellence. 

Essential Functions  

The Facilities and Maintenance Associate has hands-on responsibility to maintain the facilities and campus in a safe, clean, secure, and properly functioning condition, while ensuring that the overall condition of the property is above standard. Responsibilities include:

  • Completing regular maintenance inspections of facilities, perform repairs and maintenance as needed; proactively identify and report that all vendors are performing their contracted duties
  • Self-performing all basic repairs related to plumbing, electrical, mechanical equipment, HVAC and fire extinguishers
  • Performing light carpentry, painting, dry wall, flooring, plumbing and minor electrical (replacing switches, ballasts, bulbs and fixtures)
  • Sweeping/mopping/scrubbing/vacuuming, dusting/polishing
  • Accepting deliveries, inspect the grounds, and attend to all facilities related issues as they arise
  • Collecting and disposing of obsolete equipment and trash
  • Setting up furniture and equipment
  • Handling minor repairs and furniture assembly
  • Making signs and name plates
  • Performing a variety of maintenance tasks and responsibilities related to grounds and building care, and preventive maintenance on building, grounds and equipment
  • Replacing lights, painting and assembling components
  • Maintaining solid working relationships with building staff, vendors, landlords and service providers. 
  • Operating equipment to perform responsibilities
  • Remaining responsible for all appearance, functionality and maintenance of properties that are assigned
  • Assisting in setting up for school events as necessary
  • Unpacking shipments
  • Working closely and collaboratively with staff, security, administration all to support the smooth workings of the school
  • Handling any and all responsibilities as needed and required

Experience and Capabilities

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in facilities and/or maintenance
  • Licensed plumber and/or electrician preferred
  • Must be able to follow basic safety procedures and precautions due to physical risks
  • Demonstrates interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Ability to understand and simple instructions and operate proactively and independently
  • Excellent organizational and follow-up skills with strong attention to detail, with an ability to complete all assigned tasks as scheduled
  • Must be a self-starter with the ability to adhere to procedures
  • Valid drivers license and good driving record

Compensation $22/hr

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a 40/hr work week. Evening hours 3 pm to 11pm Mon -Fri.

Work Environment

The work is regularly performed in a combination with the office site buildings and throughout the external grounds, and can be exposed to among other things, the environment, dust, odors, oil and noise.

Physical Demands

  • Workday regularly includes multiple or conflicting demands, deadlines and time pressures; Work may require sustained concentration, considerable physical effort or manual dexterity.
  • Sufficient vision (with correction) to read and to observe more distant objects.
  • Requires the ability to understand and follow oral and/or written instructions. Requires ability to lift up to 50 lbs, dexterity to use tools related to job, and working with cleaning solutions. Requires walking, standing, climbing, reaching overhead and bending.
